History of Kunsthal Brænderigården

Kunsthal Brænderigården is an exhibition venue for changing presentations of Danish and international contemporary artists. Exhibitions are on show in the following categories: visual art, architecture and design.

Kunsthal Brænderigården is based in an atmospheric, historical complex, beautifully positioned close to the lakes. The oldest part of the complex was built in 1734 when the Saxon entrepreneur Johan Gottfried erected a singular, lower levelled, main building.

In 2007 Kunsthal Brænderigården has undergone major renovation and expansion. A storehouse attached to the main building has been added and the exhibition space has grown significantly.

In the 18th centuries the buildings were a distillery which in Danish is ‘brændevinsbrænderi’ and hence the explanation for the naming of the Kunsthal Brænderigården.

There is also a vibrant and dynamic artistic environment. Danish Graphic Artists at Sølvgade in Copenhagen have established a head office at Kunsthallen Brænderigården including a sales office for contemporary, Danish Graphic Art.
The graphic workshop at Kunsthal Brænderigården is supervised by a professional printer and offers numbered printings and courses in printmaking.
Professional artists can rent the graphic workshop, as well as the artist studio. In addition to all the above Kunsthal Brænderigården includes an Art School and Viborg Art Association.
